Celtic FC Fires Manager Wilfried Nancy After Worst Win Percentage in Club's History
Celtic have wasted little time in sacking manager Wilfried Nancy, just eight games into his time in Glasgow, following a dismal 25% win percentage. A major overhaul also sees the departure of Paul Tisdale from his role as head of football operations.
Celtic have wasted little time in sacking manager Wilfried Nancy, just eight games into his time in Glasgow, having been hired in December 2025 as the permanent successor to Brendan Rodgers. Martin O'Neill had served as interim boss following Rodgers' dismissal and was remarkably at the helm for longer than Nancy. The last nail in the Frenchman's coffin was a 3-1 Old Firm defeat to Rangers at Parkhead on Saturday.A statement published by the club on Monday afternoon confirmed: Celtic Football Club today announces that it has decided to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, with immediate effect. The club thanks Wilfried for his efforts and wishes him and his family well for the future."Wilfried's assistants, Kwame Ampadu, Jules Gueguen, and Maxime Chalier, will also be leaving the club and they take with them our good wishes."As part of the changes, Celtic have also confirmed that Paul Tisdale is no longer head of football operations. "We thank Paul for the contribution he has made in that role."After landing the job because of his stellar record in Major League Soccer with Columbus Crew, MLS Cup champions in 2023 and Leagues Cup winners in 2024, Nancy recorded just two wins as Celtic manager from his eight games in charge. That equates to a 25% win percentage, which places him dead last in the entire 129-history of Celtic managers, since the very first - Willie Maley - was appointed in 1897.The next worst is Lou Macari, who was in charge for eight months across 1993 and 1994, winning 35% of his 34 games. O'Neill's interim tenure, which lasted four days longer than Nancy's permanent appointment, had an 87.5% winning record across his temporary spell. Of all permanent Celtic managers, O'Neill's 75.5% from his first spell between 2000 and 2005 is the best.Looking for smarter football bets? Celtic's Abrupt Decision to Part Ways with Wilfried Nancy
Celtic Football Club made waves in the football world with their swift decision to terminate the contract of manager Wilfried Nancy, only eight games into his tenure. The final straw came in the form of a 3-1 defeat against Rangers, which solidified Nancy's position at the bottom of the club's historical win percentage list.
Transition in Leadership: Paul Tisdale Departs as Head of Football Operations
Alongside Nancy's departure, Celtic also announced a significant change in their leadership structure by parting ways with Paul Tisdale, who held the position of head of football operations. Tisdale's exit marks a pivotal moment as the club seeks to pivot from their recent struggles.
Comparing Nancy's Record with Past Celtic Managers
Wilfried Nancy's short-lived stint as Celtic manager painted a bleak picture, with just two wins from eight games translating into a paltry 25% win rate. This places him at the bottom of the historical list of Celtic managers, trailing even names like Lou Macari and Martin O'Neill whose tenures, albeit shorter in the case of O'Neill's interim period, yielded higher win percentages.
The Legacy of Martin O'Neill at Celtic
In contrast to Nancy's turbulent reign, Martin O'Neill stands out as one of Celtic's most successful managers. O'Neill's remarkable 75.5% win rate during his initial spell with the club showcases the stark difference between managerial tenures and underscores the importance of consistent performance in football management.
Looking Ahead for Celtic
With Nancy and Tisdale's departures marking a significant change in Celtic's management structure, fans and analysts alike will be eager to see how the club moves forward. The search for a new manager and potential restructuring in the football operations department will be crucial in shaping Celtic's future trajectory on the pitch.
